Doctor of Philosophy
The Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) is the highest academic degree offered at Myanmar Institute of Theology.
With the help of information technology, formal education system around the world is changing rapidly, and so is the theological education, While many international students are able to pursue doctoral studies in theological fields in other countries, theological faculties in our country are still facing not only with financial difficulty but also with language and cultural barriers in studying abroad.
While many qualified Myanmar students have abilities to get enrolled in doctorate program abroad, circumstances have not allowed them to pursue it. To facilitate the students who want to pursue doctorate degree in theological studies within Myanmar, the Myanmar Institute of Theology will inaugurate the Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) degree program in October 2014.
PURPOSE
The PhD program has the following purposes:
- To promote theological research and reflection in an Asian context.
- To encourage faculty development and academic careers in theological education.
- To promote theological dialogue with societies, cultures and religions in Asia.
AREAS OF STUDY
The PhD program is offered in the following areas of study:
- Biblical Studies (Old Testament, New Testament)
- History and Mission (Church History, Mission, World Christianity)
- Practical Theology (Christian Religious Education, Pastoral Theology)
- Theology (Contextual Theology, Theology of Religions, Systematic Theology)
- Applicants for admission must hold an MTh degree or a DMin degree or an equivalent degree from one of MIT’s recognized theological schools.
- Applicants must have a grade point average of minimum 3.5 on 4:00 scale on each transcript submitted.
- The maximum age limit for admission is 50.
- A minimum required TOEFL CBT score is 213 or TOEFL iBT score 79-80 or IELTS score 6.0 (valid for two years).
- The deadline for submission of the application form and all required documents is November 30.
- Eight courses are required for the program of study. Two courses must be taken from other fields that contribute directly to the student’s dissertation.
- All PhD students are required to take a “Research Methodology” course in the first semester of the first year.
- All PhD students in Biblical Studies must pass a Hebrew or Greek test before the end of their first year of study.
- In addition to the eight required courses, interdisciplinary seminars, comprehensive examinations, and a dissertation are required for graduation.
- The PhD program is designed to be completed in four years. However, students have a maximum of seven years to complete it.
